Elements of a Tech Pack

General Information
Style name, reference number, season, creation date, and document version. This information identifies the garment and allows tracking changes during development.
Technical Drawing (Flat Sketch)
A flat illustration of the garment showing front, back, and relevant details. It’s not an artistic drawing but a technical representation with correct proportions that shows seams, pockets, closures, and all construction elements.
Measurement Chart
Exact measurements for each size in centimeters or inches. Includes total length, chest width, sleeve length, waist circumference, and any relevant measurement depending on the garment type. The chart must specify how and where measurements are taken.
Material Specifications
Details of all fabrics used: composition, weight, width, supplier if applicable. Also includes information about interlinings, linings, and any secondary material that forms part of the garment.
Color Card
Exact colors with Pantone references or specific codes. Generic names like “navy blue” aren’t enough. Each color must have an objective reference that any supplier can replicate.
Trims and Accessories
Complete list of buttons, zippers, labels, cords, buckles, and any additional components. Includes specifications for size, material, color, and exact placement on the garment.
Construction Instructions
Details on stitch types, stitches per centimeter, seam allowances, edge finishes, and any specific technique required. This section guides the seamstress through the construction process.
Labeling and Packaging
Specifications for brand labels, composition and care labels, hang tags, bags, and any presentation element of the final product.
Additional Notes
Any relevant information that doesn’t fit in other sections: special instructions, references to similar garments, points of attention, or comments for the manufacturer.
Common Tech Pack Mistakes
Even experienced designers make mistakes in their tech packs. Knowing them helps avoid them.
- Incomplete measurements. Forgetting a critical measurement forces the manufacturer to improvise. Every relevant dimension must be documented.
- Ambiguous color references. Describing a color as “forest green” leaves too much room for interpretation. Pantone codes eliminate this ambiguity.
- Lack of tolerances. Exact measurements are ideal, but real production has variations. Specifying acceptable tolerances (for example, ±1 cm) establishes clear limits.
- Imprecise technical drawings. A poorly proportioned flat sketch or one with incorrect details generates confusion. The drawing must be technically precise, not artistic.
- Not updating versions. Designs evolve during development. Each change must be reflected in a new version of the tech pack, clearly identified.
- Omitting trim information. Buttons, zippers, and labels seem like minor details, but they define the perceived quality of the garment. Specifying them in detail is essential.
